Getting Involved
There are a number of actions you can take to accelerate the calling of a 2nd Con Con. Here are some of them.
1. Personal networking. Tell and E-mail your friends, colleagues, and acquaintances about 2concon.org and ask them to tell pay us a visit and to tell and Email their friends, colleagues and acquaintances about us and ask their network of connections to tell and E-mail their friends, etc., ad infinitum. This is a movement that will be built from the bottom to the top and will grow exponentially if each person tells three to ten other persons about us.
2. Involve members of non-profit organizations. If you are a member of a not-for-profit organization, post our website on their message board with a few comments explaining what we are trying to accomplish. If the organization is based on a single cause, such as the death penalty, the Electoral College, or the legalization of marijuana, try to persuade members of the organization that joining forces with 2concon.org to call for a Con Con may be the most effective way to accomplish their goal.
Suggest to the board of a single issue organization, that it call upon its members to write letters to their state legislators giving multiple reasons why state legislators should ask Congress to call for a 2nd Con Con. Try to get permission from your organization for its blog or website to link up with 2concon.org.
3. Apply Pressure to Members of State Legislatures
Since 2/3 of the state legislatures (by majority vote) must apply to Congress for a Constitutional Convention that means there must be individual and organized efforts directed towards individual legislators in all 50 states. First, communicate with your assemblyperson and your state senator and give them at least four reasons for having a Con Con. (Our first four proposed amendments might be good for starters.) In addition, E-mail the speaker of the Assembly and the Senate leader and the chairpersons of the committees which would be responsible for holding hearings on a 2nd Con Con. Give them at least the same number of reasons for a 2nd Con Con that you gave your Assemblyman and state senator. Refer all of these legislators to our website. Tell these legislators that their response to your request will be posted on opur message board. If you get no reply or a response that is unfavorable from your district’s state senator or assemblyperson , tell your senator or assemblyperson that you will not vote for his or her re-election until he or she agrees to vote to apply to Congress for a 2nd Con Con.
4. Post on our message board whatever you have done to support a furtherance of a 2nd Con Con (including the smallest acts such as telling a stranger about 2concon.org). Pass along stories of success. Look for announcements of rallies, protests, and news from 2 concon.org which will include information from other places in the states, commonwealths, and territories, along with various blogs, and other media that may create inspiration for more 2nd Con Con perspiration.
5. Write letters to the editors of local and regional newspapers supporting a 2nd Con Con. In that letter refer to 2concon.org. This letter will give many readers an opportunity to consider the underlying rationality of a 2nd Con Con. The initial shock of the idea of a Con Con might linger awhile and letters to the editor will help soften public resistance. Eventually, the people will be ready to listen why one is necessary.
6. Make an effort to get local support from your local politicians. When city and county councils or supervisors announce their support for national issues, this often gets the attention of higher elected officials, such as state legislators. If you know any celebrities, ask the celebrity for his or her written or verbal support. Celebrities and those who admire them could have an influence far beyond their numbers.
7. Try to get the support of Labor Unions, Business Associations, and Environmental Organizations. The issue is non-partisan and all large groups should be contacted for their support. You may have to be willing to give a short presentation at one of their meetings. This will not be difficult if you go to such meetings with a list of several reasons for having a 2nd Con Con.
8. In all of your discussions and contacts regarding a 2nd Con Con, refer to 2concon.org to add persuasive ammunition to your ideas and to give the impression that there is a movement for a 2nd Constitutional Convention.
9. Post any news you may have below at “What Have You Done for a @nd Con Con Lately?
The process of advocating for a 2nd Con Con may take several years before fruition. The most important quality of this campaign may well be, what the Chinese call, righteous perseverance. Return to our web site for verbal injections of righteous perseverance as we move for that day when Congress gives that long awaited call for a 2nd Con Con.
